The School Library

The School Library is run by Librarian Miss Rice and is open every lunchtime and after school till 4.00pm.

The Library is an accessible, multimedia, learning resource centre and we aim to provide a welcoming and inclusive learning environment where reading for pleasure and a positive attitude to learning is actively promoted and encouraged. See our ‘Guide to Borrowing’ here.

There are two main areas to the Library: one for reading and independent study, with a huge variety of fiction and non-fiction for everyone from Year 7 to Year 11 and staff. There is comfortable seating for quiet reading, fun interactive displays and desks for studying with revision resources available to support. The other area is dedicated to computer workstations where students can research online, revise and complete their homework.

We regularly run quizzes, contests and competitions to encourage students to push their reading boundaries and these are shared by Miss Rice via the Library Google Classrooms, in tutor time and via social media. Students can take part in the “Starbooks” Loyalty card scheme whereby they collect stamps for books read and reviewed which can then earn house points. There is also the opportunity to become involved with helping run the Library by becoming a Student Librarian.

Hayle Academy has teamed up with Cornwall Library Service to bring you BorrowBox.

BorrowBox is an easy to use platform that allows students to select and download e-books and e-Audiobooks to your computer or any mobile device to read whenever and wherever you like.

Each student in the school will be given an electronic library card number which will allow them free access to e-books and e-audiobooks through the Borrowbox library app, and free newspapers and magazines through the Pressreader app. There are no overdue charges, no loan charges – it is all completely free!

Students will be able to access this material in school and from home if a mobile device is available.

Say hello to your future library, wherever you are, whenever you are free.

Library Challenges & Events

On 9th May we made the journey to the Eden Project for this year’s Kernow Youth Book Awards (KYBA).

This year’s event took the format of a ‘Celebration of Reading’ and the students were treated to talks from authors including Rob Badcock & Claire Owen. We were privileged to be part of a pre-publication book launch of Ghosted by Emily Barr and we all loved the poetry performance by hip hop artist (and poet!) Karl Nova. We even managed to get our hands on a couple of signed copies for the Library!

Next year’s KYBA will hopefully be bringing back the voting and awards ceremony, so if you have any book recommendations for the longlist, be sure to take a trip to the Library and see Miss Rice!
