A message from our Headteacher
Hayle Academy truly is a special place – and it all stems from our ambitious and caring approach.
One of the many benefits of being a small school is that we’re able to get to know each student individually, giving each and every child the attention and support they deserve. And we do this because we believe that our students should be appropriately challenged, both academically and in broader life skills.
So we encourage all our students to think deeply about everything that they do in learning and in life. And, we provide the support and structure to do it.
It’s thanks to this holistic approach that we are now ranked as one of the top 8 schools in the county for academic progress. But we’re not content to stop here. We aim to be a beacon of excellence across the board.
An incredible amount of work has already been put into our curriculum. And it’s fair to say that over the past few years, we’ve achieved a lot. That means we now enjoy the momentum, energy and inspiration to keep pushing the boundaries, finding new ways and reaching new heights. We’re not a school that’s happy to stand still.
So we’re driving forwards in a number of areas: reading, student mental health and well-being, and improving opportunities for all.
In reading…
We believe that literacy is vital for every child and aim to become a “reading school”. This means all students are confident and fluent readers by the end of year 7 and, by the time they leave Hayle Academy, they will be able to confidently discuss their favourite authors and genres with embedded lifelong reading habits. Those who most need it enjoy a tiered program of both teacher-led and peer-to-peer reading support. This is combined with a creative library system, themed activities and student access to the whole of Cornwall’s library service for both e-books and audiobooks.
In student well-being and mental health…
Our student-led harm prevention team is another shining example of the work the school is doing to promote health and well-being across every age group. Our student ambassadors are empowered to promote anti-bullying, mental health and sexual harm prevention and to share their message widely across the school. In a testament to its success, OFSTED credits this scheme with ensuring that bullying is rare (and where it does occur, it is dealt with quickly).
In opportunities for all…
Our mission is to help every child grow into the adult they aspire to be. And this means providing opportunities outside of the traditional school curriculum. Our Broad Horizons scheme allows every student time (within the school timetable) to develop themselves, learn new skills and give back to the community. With over 30 activities to choose from, Broad Horizons offers a rich programme of activities not available at most other schools nationally. We prioritise the whole child and have a comprehensive personal development programme in place to support this.
Want to come and see for yourself? I’d love to show you around.
