Literacy

Literacy is the foundation of lifelong learning, personal development, and the ability to fully participate in society. That’s why we aim to become a “reading school” where all students are confident and fluent readers. Our focus on reading is supported during tutor time when tutors model good reading behaviour and students enjoy listening to their tutors reading to them at least weekly.

We are running a school pilot scheme to support a daily home reading programme. This sector-leading practice is proven to foster a love of reading, improve vocabulary, and ensures that literacy isn’t just about passing exams – but also about learning about the world and developing life skills. And not only this but those who most need it also enjoy a tiered teacher-led and peer-to-peer reading support programme.

These programmes are combined with creative library system themed activities and students access to the whole of Cornwall’s library service for e-books and audiobooks.

‘Nuff Said Award

We are proud to have  won the 2025 The ‘Nuff Said Award for the best Excelsior Award display.

‘Nuff Said is one of Stan Lee’s more memorable and frequently used phrases and it simply means… no words are necessary. What better way to describe a great display?!

At Hayle Academy, we put reading for pleasure at the heart of our school and we are delighted to announce that we have the author Alexandra Beaumont joining us and representing our school as our very own Patron of Reading. We feel so privileged to have this incredible opportunity and special link with Alexandra, particularly because her most recent novel ‘Dissonance of Bird Song’ is set in beautiful Cornwall, where her writing style meets both Cornish myths and folklore. We look forward to Alexandra visiting Hayle Academy and working closely with us as a school.

Why is no one around when Lance and the rest of Year Six arrive at the brand new Crater Lake activity centre? But this is just the beginning of the school trip from hell; a fight for survival that sees five pupils band together to save their classmates from an alien fate far worse than death. But whatever happens, they must Never. Ever. Fall asleep!

KS4: Those we Drown by Amy Goldsmith. When Liv lands an all-expenses-paid opportunity to study aboard the luxury cruise ship the Eos for a semester, she can’t believe her luck. But as soon as she steps on board, Liv realizes just how out of her depth she is. Liv quickly discovers that the only reason she was invited to join the trip is because another girl disappeared shortly after enrolling-and no one seems to know what happened to her. When further disappearances rock the ship and strange creatures begin haunting Liv’s dreams, she wonders: Is the Eos hiding a dark secret within its shadowy decks?
